Faulty electric smart meter

I have a first generation electric smart meter - a Landis + Gyr E470 - which began giving faulty readings last November. The reading in April was 0308.3, the reading in August was 0320.2 and then the reading in November was 0853.7. Obviously something has affected the meter reading between August and November to give such a dramatic increase. I have spoken to SoEnergy about this many times between then and now, being told that the Smart Meter is an old first generation meter and not reliable and that the issue lies with the meter. They told me this would be resolved by updating the meter firmware remotely? I'm still waiting for this to be done. My worry is that I have no accurate record of how much electricity I've actually used and SoEnergy don't reply to my emails that I'm regularly sending to try and get this resolved. My fixed rate deal came to an end at the beginning of Feb 22 and with the increase in fuel costs, this has made the issue more urgent to resolve!! What should I do??

It may have already have been done, how do you know it hasn't?
Are you taking daily meter readings so you have proof of the fault?

Your usage of 853 - 308 or 545kWh in a period of up to 9 months is hardly excessive. It equates to 60kWh/month. My monthly electricity usage is in excess of 300kWh/month and we heat our home with gas. Just because your smart meter is first generation doesn't make it unreliable. It is just a metering device - similar to the meter that it replaced - which has the ability to transmit data.

Have a look at your statements. Is your supplier using smart meter readings to bill you? These readings are usually annotated with a 'S' or smart. It is possible that a firmware update has been deployed and the reading of 0853 is accurate - whereas the readings of 0308 and 0320 were just estimates.

By way of clarification, I should have added that smart meters retain import data for 13 months. If the meter cad the supplier can communicate with each other, the supplier can pull all this data manually.

@royalcresent  Do you know when the meter was installed ? - there will be a sticker on it.

Can you read the meter yourself today please

Edit - if it is 3 years old - your consumption is extremely low. Take care when you read the meter = look out for the decimal point
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill
  • There is no sticker on the meter but there is a card left by npower detailing a meter update in 2016, so I presume this was when it was installed?

The meter read today is 3381.820
  • I am taking regular meter readings which just follow on from the previous readings at the higher rate. SoEnergy are giving me estimated readings for the time being, but the thing that worries me is the jump from April to August of 12 units to the reading from August to November of 533 units?

Then in November I'm getting daily readings of around 30 units which is almost three times the amount from April to August?

If it's displaying seven digits, with three after the decimal, it sounds like you've got the same fault as has been reported here previously.
Later, I'll try to dig out some links to the previous threads.
