Hi
My friend has an business account with Howdens, he buys lots and lots of kitchens so said he can get me a good discount.
My kitchen is tiny, the quote came in at £6,500 so I called Howdens and they said the discount had been applied at 35%?

I don’t work with maths so what does this mean? Is it a good discount? Thanks 🙏

How big is the kitchen, and how many units are you putting in ?Howdens (and Magnet) "discounts" is one of my biggest gripes with these kitchen suppliers - I just want a reasonable price without having to jump through hoops to get it.... I'd suggest comparing prices with someone like DIY Kitchens or IKEA if you just want a supply only service. Her courage will change the world.
Treasure the moments that you have. Savour them for as long as you can for they will never come back again.0 -
Our kitchen came from Howdens and some of the 'discounts' applied were massive. They start from crazily high base line before applying the discount. Highest unit discount was over 80% on ours. We had fairly high spec units and included double oven and microwave, all for about the price you quote. Kitchen is roughly 3 metres both directions. (Didn't wan't to say 3 metres square 'coz of the possible confusion on sizing) :-)

Hi Rosie,
I know its a old post. However to confirm without a shadow of doubt
Wren, Howden, Magnet, Wickes all sell a similar very average carcase.
The prices are super inflated.
( Always ask yourself, can you buy half price petrol? / Milk? / plasterboard / cars) obviously not.
Its fair that if a builder supplies items to you they may claim a %. I would think 10 % would be the maximum.
Howden for example are so inflated that discounts well over 50% have to be applied.
Its interesting to note any kitchens purchased do not have a guarantee, unless it says TRANSFERABLE. The warranty remains in the builders name, local managers would honour any claims but there is no legal basis for redress.

Standard markups in business are much greater than 10%.

Actually Risteard, they are much higher, BUT the SUPPLIER / MANUFACTURER will be making an average margin on Furniture of 40-60 % Gross Margin, sometimes as low as 30 ish.
There is no room for a builder to add another say 35%. if this was the case a COST price of £5000 nett of vat would be charged to the end user at £14k inc vat..... and then dont forget we are in the realms of who pays the vat ?? . If the contract is in the builders name he would be LIABLE for vat, even if the customer paid ( assuming over the vat threshold , which he would be if its an on going part of his business ).
That is why there is only room for a little Builders margin on a job ( on top of the materials price )0
