It is not an element of being frightened of smart meters, there is virtually no mobile phone signal in the area and I won't put devices that I have no control over their security controls onto the home broadband so it won't function as a smart meter anyhow.
If you hate BG so much, have you looked into switching to an alternative company, potentially that you would be prepared to set up a DD with?
From what I've read, there's no point doing that in order to swap from SVR with one company to SVR with another...

I too am stuck with BG.  Hate them.  Don't trust them after the last time they changed my gas meter & left me with a leak that they tried to charge me to repair.  Even years before that they had tried to take me to court because they kept moving my bills (when they actually produced them) forward so much that they moved them to before the normal DD was taken.  They are now trying to get a smart meter fitted.  I am still self isolating so good luck with that.  I give them readings every month even though they can't be bothered billing me.  Why on earth do I need a smart meter?

Switching isn't an option because they don't want to accept you on an SVR so it is going to cost you more.

There wouldn't be generally but I was referring specifically for you since you apparently hate British Gas and this is in part making you pay more because it means you won't use a DD. You can't swap to another suppliers SVR though as far as I'm aware; it would need to be some other tariff.

Scroll up a few pages and it was mentioned the smart meter is a mistake on the part of BG ;)

I can cope with the price difference between DD and non-DD in the short-term if it means keeping BG away from DD access to my bank.

I made my suggestion mostly as it sounded like you hated BG so much that you didn't want to be a customer of theirs. Obviously stay put if you're happy though  :).
  • Just to add, EDF are hiking my gas by 69 percent for the same usage on whatever they call their SVR.

They're also telling me — frequently — it is "essential" I have a smart meter. Which it isn't.

I don't, but if I can't change from SVR to SVR, or I have to take a higher rate with another company to leave BG, then I'll ride out the current situation at a known X price over a potentially higher Y price for not being on SVR ;)

There’s been a suggestion that EDF are willing to take new customers on the SVR I believe.
