Radiator has me boiling...

In this day of soaring energy prices I'm on a mission to sort out all the radiator TRVs. Mission accomplished bar one which won't play ball. I've set this one to 0 as it is an often unused room but it has now decided to heat up whether it's on 0, frost setting or any number between 1 and 6. I just want it to obey when it's on 0 and stay cold when the central heating's on. Any ideas? Also if it involves getting at the inside to perform tapping on some spring or other, how do I get this plastic cap off? Idiot's guide would be welcome. Hoping if possible to avoid one of them expensive plumber-type gadgies.

looking at that I would suggest trying to rotate the knurled ring to remove the head. you can then check if the pin in the valve moves.

May sound basic but is it guaranteed that can't lead to a faceful of water?

Yup i had to do this. Unscrew head then tapped the pin to unstick it then it worked fine

I'll give it a whirl but may leave until daytime tomorrow when 999 plumber help may be easier to get should it not go quite as planned :)

Hullo @digannio, yes you will be fine undoing the ribbed nut.  Should then expose a metal pin that moves in/out to close/open the valve

Is that no water, I promise or no water promise? There's a world of difference :)

If water was leaking past the pin you would already have a visible leak as the white plastic TRV head is not water tight.

I have removed an number of TRV heads and never had a leak.

When you unscrew the knurled collar, make absolutely sure that no part of the metal valve housing to the right of it moves.
A man walked into a car showroom.
He said to the salesman, “My wife would like to talk to you about the Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
Salesman said, “We haven't got a Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
The man replied, “You have now mate".
