car now classed as cat N whats next

Hi i recently had no fault accident and my car is now classed as cat N and Ive agreed with 3rd party o keep car for repairs and agreed setllement.
Ive already updated my insurer about the accident for information puposes only and Ive never opened a claim with my insurance as it was all dealt by the 'on fault' insurer.

I've couple of questions on my cat-n car:

- Do I need to inform my own insurer about that car is cat-n and need to buy the insurance again on higher rates?
- do i need to contact dvla o let them know its writeoff cat-n?

Thanks

Get the repairs done and carry on.  Notify your insurer just to be safe that it is back on the road.

    No need to inform DVLA..
  • Do i need to tell insurer that its 'cat-n' now. my insurer was already informed about the accident due to legal reason(googled).

I cannot find any legal oligation to update insurer but want to make sure this is the case.

It's always better to tell them ASAP than to find out when you make a claim.

You only have to tell your insurer if they ask you - either directly via a list of assumptions which you have to confirm are correct. Your policy booklet will include a list of things that you have to tell them about - if it's not in the list then you don't have to tell them.

It probably won't be on the list - very few (possibly no?) insurers ask if the car had ever been written off or use it as a factor in pricing. Only real difference it makes if that if the car gets written off again the payout will be reduced to take account of the effect that a Cat N marker has on its value.

Insurers don't ask about if your car has been a right off before or not, the only time it comes into play is if the vehicle is beyond economical repair again because a vehicle that's been total lossed before is worth less than a car that never has but your policy docs will say Market Value and that bridge would be crossed at the point of the vehicle valuation in the next claim

"Hi i recently had no fault accident and my car is now classed as cat N and Ive agreed with 3rd party o keep car for repairs and agreed setllement."

I am not sure a third Party can put a CAT N on your car, had this threatened by a third party before, this is the sort of bullying tactics the likes of Direct Line will try.

If they are repairing your car and putting a CAT N on it I would want some compensation on the cars value. I suspect they are not putting a CAT N on your car as they are not the insurer !.

They aren't repairing the car, they are total losing the car @caprikid1 but the OP is buying the salvage from them with the intention of repairing. The OP has already been compensated for the full pre accident value of the car, nothing else is required for the fact its a cat N

We certainly would inform the DVLA of any total loss irrespective if it was our customer or a third party's... would be dangerous to think that insurers didn't inform DVLA and you could have Cat A and Cat B's out on the road because no one told the DVLA.
