Removal of Electricity Power Supply Cable and Smart Meter

Historically my property had two electricity power feeds and consequently two meters. For decades we toyed with consolidating these and potential savings on ever increasing standing charges. All our meters are supposedly smart (although our GAS meter has never been commissioned by Bulb in its 2+ years of existence!) One side of our house was rented (a long while ago) and hence the reason for the additional electricity meter. Both sides of our house were recently rewired finally making one of our meters redundant. I have had quotes to remove the redundant live cabling into the property and its associated meter. Western Power Distribution will charge a standard £400! Bulb will charge a standard £120 and Siemens £186! The cable run length means that WPD are charging over £100 per meter for two engineers to do the live work. Apparently the Siemens charge is for removing a ‘smart’ meter that never communicated with our ‘dumb’ Gas meter. Also when the electricity meter is removed our Gas meter will never become ‘smart’ (as they remove the communications equipment which is attached to the Elec meter). Does anyone else think that removal charging is excessive (nearly £700, for a potential. Standing charge saving of £183 per year)?

I was surprised they didn't quote thousands. WPD often do for putting on new connections. With daily charges now at about 50p, you'll have you money back in 4 years.
