EON v11 or Octopus Go

    Hi all,

Firstly, I'd like to thank all the amazing people on here who help each other. I have been an avid reader and they've often solved my problems without me needing to post.

I recently purchased an EV car. (It's yet to arrive) When I saw EON's v11 tariff, I signed up almost immediately. After reading some more, I saw that Octopus have an EV specific tariff... Octopus Go. (EON used to have one but it is no longer offered.)

I feel like Octopus' tariff is a better deal but am starting to second guess myself. I am currently in the 14 day cooling-off period between the two suppliers. (Gas is staying with EON)

    The electrcity rates are:

    EON
    SC - 37.92p
    UR - 29.24p

    Octopus Go
    SC - 24.01p
    UR between 4:30 and 00:30 - 30.83p
    UR between 00:30 and 4:30 - 7.5p

    What do you all think?

Under the present rules you cannot sign up for Go; Go Faster or the Intelligent tariff for EVs unless you actually own an EV and have an EVSE. If you switch, Octopus will put you on its flexible tariff until you meet the EV sign up criteria.

Our Octopus Go Tariff is designed for customers who either own or long-term lease a battery electric vehicle or a plug-in hybrid vehicle that they'll be charging at home, so you need one to join. If you sign up without one, or you're in the process of getting one, we'll be here to help find you another tariff that's more suitable for your setup in the meantime.
Ahhh good point! Is it worth delaying my Octopus start date then till middle of April?

The interim Octopus tariff is :
    SC - 24p
    UR - 38p

    Compared to EON
    SC - 37.92p
    UR - 29.24p
That's for you to decide. Before moving any customer to an EV tariff, Octopus will insist on a working smart meter that is configured to the 30 minute usage profile. All Octopus EV tariff billing is based on 30 minute usage not meter index readings. Occasionally, billing can stop if any of the 48 daily time slot data is not received. Octopus then has to carry out a manual data pull. As a supplier, Octopus isn't perfect but they get most things right which is what I have been an electricity customer with them for 4 years. I am presently on Octopus' Go Faster 5 hour tariff.

Whether Go or Go Faster will work for you will depend on how often you need to charge your EV and by how much each night. Downloading 28kWh from the Grid will not give you 28kWh in your EV due to transmission loses. Equally, how much of your other energy use can you swift to the cheap period? Some EV owners are now considering moving to a standard E7 tariff. The Intelligent Tariff is also very attractive for those who have an OCPP-compatible car or EVSE (charging point).

That can be a useful money saver.   I'm on Octopus Go (16.26/5 p/kWh) and routinely use the dishwasher, washing machine, bread maker, dehumidfier as well as occasional EV charge overnight.   In January, that knocked my unit rate down to 12.37p/kWh, very similar to each of the 3 months Oct-Dec.

I've just signed up for a similar tariff for my new house that needs renovating, so I'm keen on the low SC, as I won't be using many units, for a while. The good thing is there's no exit fees to change tariffs in Octopus.

Have you already got a smart meter? You'll need that for when you get onto the Go tariff.
