As an employer I can say that in every instance we've extended someone's probation (probably 1 in 10 new starters) it hasn't ended well for them - people don't tend to get better or fit more into the job after 3 months (6 in our case).

I'm not saying your partner and son aren't performing, but I wouldn't expect these jobs to last.
