Previous occupier's energy bill & standing charges

Hello,
I have recently moved to a new rental & EDF was the energy supplier. I did not want to sign up with EDF but called them to advise them anyway as I remembered a letter from them that the landlady took away.
It was my understanding that a new tenant has to get in touch with the current energy provider of the property to advise them on either to continue with them or not. It is also my understanding that if I switch, there is a time period where I will have to pay them until the switch is complete. I hope this is right?

So EDF requested that I email them my AST agreement which started on 17th February to confirm my move-in date.
I would like to understand whether they have the rights to charge me the standing charges prior to my move-in date? Or should my bill only cover the standing charges & consumption from my move-in date only?

Thanks for your help!

You are responsible for the standing charges and any energy used from the day your tenancy began, not the day you actually moved in.
... and you have to register with the existing supplier first, and then if you want to switch you can, but no, you are not contacting them to tell them if you are staying with them or not, you don't have that choice until after you have registered.
Also do make sure that they keep you on the capped variable tariff, do not let them get you to agree to a fixed tariff unless you like the rates they are offering you and do not intent to switch away.
