Probably 75+ years worth of paint rather than render over the top of pebbles.

Sure I'll test it for sure. I don't think its pebble dash as we're used to seeing. It's kind of "underneath" the render
If it's roughcast the stones are put into the mix before going on the wall, whereas with pebbledash it's thrown on later.

I think it's roughcast then but I'll double check and post a picture

So, I've had the scaffolding up and realised it's the paint that's blown, not the render, generally speaking. Don't get me wrong, the odd crack here and there and a couple of fairly significant ones which I've thoroughly filled in and painted with two layers of sandtex.

It rained yesterday and I'm still getting patches on the wall :(. I've very disappointed. Any advice?? I'm at my wit's end.

Here are the patches last night
  • Have you made any progress with this?

It's a head scratcher as I can't see how those cracks would allow enough moisture in to cause that level of damp, are you100% sure there is no water leaking from guttering or down pipes?
  • Hi terminal.

No. I filled in a lot of gaps and painted and still having the same issues (if anything worse). I cannot absolutely say no but the wall has no guttering as it's on the 'triangle' side of the roof (if you get me). There are downpipes but would that cause an issue the entire way across the wall? Wouldn't it be more localised?

I haven't followed the whole thread but have you tried playing a hosepipe over parts of the area to work out where water causes the problem internall;y?

I meant have you tried recreating  the situation of rain on the outside, by spraying specific areas of the gable/roof to see where the water is getting in?
