Will old hdmi cable support 4k ?

I have just got a samsung qled 85 inch tv - updated to sky uhd and got new 1tb uhd box.   The guys came and replaced the tv on the wall with the new tv --- but I have noticed they did not replace the hdmi cable with the pink hi-speed one provided by SKY - I cannot change it over as the tv is against the wall .      The cable was fitted in 2015  - I think it is a vention cable - was probably decent quality at the time - but as it is 7 years old will it over 1.4 hdmi , which it needs to be to support the 4k ?

There's usually a lot of nonsense and marketing hype talked about HDMI cables but the simply guide is, if you can currently get a 4K TV picture over your existing cable (which you should do) then you're good to go. If, on the other hand, you're watching HDR content, playing games at 60/120 fps then you may want to check whether the cable is classed as a High Speed HDMI cable.

Why not try it? Seems quicker than others speculating

4k support was added in HDMI 1.4.  Which was introduced in 2009.
  • You will be limited to 24 frames per second 4K on a HDMI 1.4 but if you upgrade to HDMI 2.0 it will be capable of 50 & 60 FPS.

Also HDMI 1.4 is limited to 8 bit colour, so you won't get HDR (high dynamic range) which use 10 or 12 bit colour.

Your Sky UHD box is capable of HDR and 50 FPS @ 4K so you will need to upgrade to benefit from this. Not sure what your TV is capable of though.
