    It looks like it has a metal base. Perhaps the tiled hearth is acting as a heat sink, drawing all the heat away. Try moving it back to the book case and see what happens. The bulb ' blowing' was just a coincidence. If moving it back works, try setting it on a piece of wood or cork tile on the hearth.
