Plug in car and OctopusGo

Hi everyone, I realise these are tough times for everyone, but am looking to try and the best out of a bad situation.

I’m due to take delivery of a plug in hybrid vehicle which will require charging over night. I was going to take advantage of the OctopusGo tariff, and am considering jumping early… let me explain.

At present I am on an Avro tariff after I was forced to move when they went bust. I am currently paying 19p per kWh and a standing charge of 24p. If I’m right, this will likely move to around 30p per kWh and the standing charge increase as well to an unknown figure.

The octopusGo tariff is currently set at 30p per kWh peak and 7.5p per kWh off peak (when I’ll be charging) and 24p standing charge. This is a fixed 12 month plan.

I’m planning on jumping early and switching prior to the late April delivery. This causes one con, which is 10p per kWh uplift until the inevitable rise in April on my current tariff. However, if counteracts that by potentially being cheaper for the other 10 month period of the contract.

Am I mad? Should I stay and make a decision later? My largest concern is that the PHEV uses 14kwh to charge per night and whilst I’m reimbursed for work travelling, during normal personal use, this could be expensive.

Any help would be great!

I'd switch as soon as you can and try to load shift as much usage to the off peak window as possible. You should have some flexibility with the Go Faster options, my off peak starts at 9:30pm which makes it easier to run the appliances in the cheap slot.

Don't forget to use a referral code, and make sure you have a compatible smart meter already installed.

Whether or not Go or Go Faster will work for you depends on how much electricity you will use peak and offpeak. I know that a number of EV owners are now looking at E7 as an alternative to Go and Go Faster.

Bear in mind, that an EV/PHEV will be considerably cheaper to ‘refuel’ than the ICE that it replaced.

You cannot switch to Go or Go Faster unless you own an EV.

    1. Have an electric car and a home EV charger

Our Octopus Go Tariff is designed for customers who either own or long-term lease a battery electric vehicle or a plug-in hybrid vehicle that they'll be charging at home, so you need one to join. If you sign up without one, or you're in the process of getting one, we'll be here to help find you another tariff that's more suitable for your setup in the meantime.

Thanks for the replies so far! Looks like I’m scuppered then. Let’s hope the rises aren’t astronomical on the go tariff. I’ll look into the economy 7. I didn’t realise that was still a thing!
