Lloyds TSB current account rip-off abroad

I've just come back from a few days in Belgium and used my Lloyds TSB debit card to pay for several meals there. I did so because I could not use my Liverpool Victoria Visa since I had not got the PIN.

When I got back I discovered that Lloyds have started making a £1 per transaction charge even for purchases using the card.

Cash withdrawls are also charged a fee (?£1.50) plus a percentage.

What a rip-off. Best bet is to get and use a Liverpool Victoria Visa Card and memorise the PIN.

LloydsTSB customers you have been warned.

So you went abroad with a credit card knowing you did not have a pin............?Was this a new card or one you did not bother to ask for a PIN?
IMO you are just as much to blame, LTSB debit card just gave you another option.

I think this is just a tad insensitive eric , the op is simply warning other people of the risks - not apportioning blame !

Anyway , you can usually still use your credit card in the old fashioned way ...... by signing your name.
have a look here for a slightly cheaper way to spend abroad

Is it not mentionned in your T&Cs that overseas transactions would be charged? I would suggest you stop whinging and check the cost of the transactions. I'm almost certain they would have cost less than the cost of buying the currency at the airport, even allowing for the handling fee.

    Yes....but....

These new charges were only introduced by Lloyds about three weeks ago, so I can understand how someone who's been used to no charges levied for this type of transaction in the past could feel a little caught out.

Details are on their website here plus if I recall they were advised to customers along with March's monthly statement.

Also beware, Lloyds have introduced a £1.50 charge for withdrawing money through cashpoints in the UK that are not their own or do not display a Link sign. Another of their new charges

I think the purpose of the OP was just to warn other Lloyds customers.....so thank you for that.

Quite right - the point of the post is to make other Lloyds customers aware of these charges BEFORE they go abroad.

Of course I may be the only person using this site unwittingly caught out by these new charges - but I doubt it.

So far nearly 100 people have read this thread - I just hope that a few of them will now NOT use their Lloyds debit cards abroad and that way they will be a few quid better off - and not Lloyds bank.

So why did not OP use the credit card that he had?

Lloyds TSB are complete rip off merchants. I have to do my father's banking and he won't change to a proper bank. They are always making errors, so what I do now is to invoke a charge on them, just as they would on a customer who made a mistake. I find that they pay up now without question.

Regarding travelling abroad, simply transfer to Nationwide. Use of their Debit & Credit Cards abroad is free, and you get a competitive rate. By far the best way to get holiday cash. No surcharges when paying by cards either. (Lloyds charge 2.75% if I remember right.)

    Because according to OP
I did so because I could not use my Liverpool Victoria Visa since I had not got the PIN.
I think he/she was probably concerned by fact that chip and pin is much more widely used abroad than it is here and thought that by not having your pin means that you can't use your CC.

I was in Florida in February and use 2 cards about 40 times in all - no transactions were chip and pin which amazed me. Last year in Amsterdam I cannot remember any chip and pin transactions.
