Before I complete the war and peace requested info on the 'compare' type websites, does anyone have any recommendations for cheap-but-ok van insurers specialising in the above?
I'm asking because the last time I completed one of these things whilst looking for a car insurance quote it appeared on my credit file which annoyed me as it was just a quote and I didn't even come close to taking out a policy with them.

It appears on your credit search as an application for insurance, no lender is going to care that you buy insurance or not.
Wasn't aware that the aggregators compared Hire & Reward, if any are my guess would be its a broker exposing their panel rather than a true aggregator just the same as SME business insurance on them tends to just be Simply Business showing their panel if you look down at the footer.1 -
I used gocompare in the end and your second paragraph rings true as Simply Business were so kind to offer me their SME Business Insurance at the end of the quote. Acorn came top (horrible reviews) with Admiral second and only a few quid more which is good because they're easily the best insurance company I've ever dealt with. It helps if you make your employees share owners.0

No, it appears GoCompare are doing their own however in the quote process it does "offer" to have Simply Business contact you to discuss your other business insurance.
Never touched Admiral's Van insurance, on the car side they are in the cheap and cheerful side of the market but are generally nice to deal with. The only downside to their car policy is that they take a very different approach to modifications to other insurers which catches people out who don't read what they are agreeing to etc.1 -
