Eon and credit report

Options
Hi I'm new to this and I would be really grateful for some advice .
I moved out of a rented flat (housing association) end june 2021, paid off my eon bill and had email confirmation of closure and subsequently showing as closed on all my credit reports . I have now just received a debt collectors letter for £40 for a 4 day period in august 2021 (so after I left and either new tenant had moved in or HA might be doing repairs, ) . .  I am pretty confident the issue can be resolved with "past due" debt collector as i can prove I didnt live there and worse case I'd just pay it, ... but will fact eon passed this on mean they have opened a new account or registered a default? I'm in process of mortgage application so it would be a disaster if this happens and completely unfair !
Thank you
If anyone can give me advice :)

Email them back, reminding then that you had moved out on "x" dats, what you sent as meter reads on the day you moved out ad that the account was paid off and closed.

Then inform them of the LA or landlord address to chase the payment from.

  • Don't pay or otherwise acknowledge the debt - odds are doing so will mean the missed payment(s)/default gets tied to your credit files. Instead I'd be complaining directly to Eon and reminding them that you closed the account on whatever date. Point them in the direction of your old LL as odds are it'll be related to the void period between tenancies, which the LL is responsible for.

Eon are an absolutely useless company, I was dropped in their lap when my old supplier went bust, sent them meter readings etc, no bill for 3 months, then today they change my balance to minus 8.5k in debt ???

I live very frugally, and currently only pay £42.40 per month for electric, I was expecting my bills to rise, but I think 8.5k is a tad excessive.
