Bank wont accept my cheque, name on cheque differs to account name

Long story short, I have received a cheque from Shell energy after they took over Green energy. I am no longer with shell or green as Octopus have taken over. I got a cheque refund for money they owed me. However my bank account name is slightly different to name on the energy account. My bank are refusing to take the cheque as they say Payee doesnt match the account. Shell say they are unable to help with any queries i have or Greens administrator might be able to help. I am a bit stuck. I use my middle name on everything but my bank account is in first and middle names and they wont accept the cheque as a middle name

I too use my middle name and my bank account has my preferred name set. Have you tried to pay the cheque in only at a branch? Maybe pay in in on the App?30+ years working in banking2

Sometimes (as happened with a relative of mine) it's the parents fault that life is complicated in this way, by deciding to name their child A B (perhaps because A is their own name) but bringing them up to be referred to as B. There are then always documents (driving licence, passport ? that need to reflect the name as formally given on the birth certificate, whislt other items wil lbe in the everyday name. It's not always then straightforward for the child to untangle.

I know of at least 3 people in my circle of friends / aquaintances who are called eg A B Smith and have been called / known by B since birth
I assume their bank accounts are in the names of A B Smith as that is what is on their birth cert / passport / driving licence needed to open their bank accounts.
I can imagine them receiving cheques on the name of B Smith
Maybe change bank?

I've never had that problem. I have a joint account with the missus. It is named 'A + Mrs B Smith'
We have successfully paid checks in as A Smith, B Smith, Mr & Mrs Smith, Albert Smith, Bertha Smith, Mr Smith, Mrs Smith.1 -
In the past I've paid cheques into my Nationwide account when they've just been made out to my middle name.
I haven't received any cheques for several years now, so I can't confirm whether it would still work.0
