Whatsapp - Messages From Non-Contacts?

Hi

I have received a message via whatsapp.  I have no clue who the person is.  No name, just what I presume is a phone number with a number starting +6011.

I thought people could only contact you in whatsapp if they are in your contacts?

What should I do - am I at any risk from this message?   I don't think I can block the person unless they are in my contacts - any ideas?

    add number to contacts and block 
    no risk unless you click on a link or start engaging with them

    Thanks - I have managed to block the number without adding to contacts.

    I thought anyone with WhatsApp could contact anyone else with WhatsApp. I get messages from complete strangers now and then, I just delete them.
    Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.

    That is correct. Scammers use a bot to generate messages to random numbers.
