Good morning all, and Happy Birthday to Gers and to anyone else celebrating today.
yes the news is dreadful at the moment and so sad seeing all those poor families fleeing their homes. You would think the last thing needed after the past two years is another war -torn countrylets home its soon sorted and settled and sanity returns.
Yes who didn't love a good jumble sale, The big queue outside with women anxious to get a bargain or two. then the doors opening and the surge in .
I can remember going with my late Mum and being a skinny wee thing (oh how times have changed) I would wriggle my way through to the front to bag any woolies I could get.
Once bought they were brought home unpicked the wool washed and reknitted into something else. Post-war austerity meant nothing was ever wasted, wooly jumpers and cardi's or anything cotton could be normally made into something else.
I remember my Mum bagging this awful jumper in bright yellow, it was unpicked and the wool made into a jumper for me. She was running short of the yellow so added brown stripes to it.I loathed it as it made me look like a very cross wasp. I had a scowl when ever I was made to wear it, and longed to out grow it. Bless her, my late Mum could see nothing wrong with the colours, but as a 7 year old going to school, and my friends all 'buzzing' when ever I had to wear it made me hate the darned thing. Well over 70 odd years ago but I still hate yellow and brown together
I also kew that if she bagged anything in grey it would end up as sock for my two brothers Another knittingtask I hated as both of us would be knitting boring grey socks for the boys. I swear they used to go through them at an astonishing rate. I hated knitting socks ,don't know if it was the colour grey I hated the most or the fact it was just so boring.
Today grey is a fasionable colour but once I grew big enough to argue I swore I would never knit another sock and certainly never in grey againKnitting and sewing was taken for granted that you would do it as a child and I still knit today but I knit in bright colours, and usually for my great grandchildren, toys or charity blankets.
Life is so different today and it seems a throw away society is more the norm now, I wonder what my late frugal little scots Mum would say at the waste of both clothes and food today, I know she would be horrified as nothing ever was wasted in our house. mainly because WW2 and austerity lasted so long, and there just wasn't the availability of stuff in the shops.
But old habits die hard and I still use up as much as I can and especially with food I can't imagine throwing food into the bin, but people do. Perhaps with the rise in prices it may make them slightly less willing to chuck stuff out, I do hope so.Apart from anything else we will run out of landfill.
Anyway enough of my waffling, time for another cuppa
Have a good day everyone and stay safe

Morning everyone
Bright and sunny here this morning and, for a change, no wind!
Quiet day yesterday - little one was here for a little while over lunchtime while DD went for some shopping. She was delighted to see little cat - I'd told her he was at the vets - they lay on the floor together and cuddled. She kept declaring 'Felix I love you!'
Got some paperwork sorted and other admin done.
This morning I need to go down to do dad's banking. Also have a repairman coming to fix my cooker - I think it needs a new element. Luckily I have a repair plan - I rang on Wednesday afternoon and was very surprised to get an appointment this morning. It says 8.05 till 12.05 but on the online tracker he seems to be in Glasgow - so about 2 hours away. I think I might go down and do dad's jobs now - I can be home in 10 minutes and they usually phone when they're closer.
Very worrying new from Ukraine - yesterday I kept reading the news on my phone - going to try not to do that today as it just made me feel stressed.
Excellent news from DD in Germany yesterday - she had a review after being in her job almost a year and it went so well. She was very happy - also got a 500 euro bonus!
Well I'm going to get on. Take care everyone x14 -
Morning all
Bright and sunny here but very cold, yesterday we had all sorts of weather - sunshine, rain. sleet and a tiny bit of snow not enough to settle though.
I am feeling so much better today, and I am starving so will get some toast after this . Will get the dogs out this morning and then I have an electrolysis appointment at linch time, I need to pop in and post a parcel on the way home and then I will have a nana nap
I dont know if you remember about my neighbour who causes all sorts of dramas, she once set light to her flat as she was bored, and very often calls an ambulance, well yesterday evening I looked out the window to see three fire engines, two police cars, a cricical care car, the fire vans and an ambulance and a helicopter, they had blocked the road off and proceded to get her out of her flat (first floor) using a cherry picker on one of the fire engines, they had to cut the rails on her balcony to get her out, and she was on a stretcher, they wisked her away in the ambulance, we dont know what happened yet but I do hope she is ok, she suffers with her mental health so I hope she has not done something to herself.
Chicken parmiginia for dinner tonight might do a few chips or a big salad with it, dd is off out for the night so we will have big pup here with us.
DP1 I am so pleased to hear your cat came back xxx
Taff sorry to hear you are feeling down xxx
And Nels you are doing so well my lovely xxx
Have good days all xxx14 -
Morning, hugs if you need one.
I for one am very concerned about what is going on in Ukraine and its consequences for the world in general and the UK in particular. Having suffered so badly this last two years with Covid, we are now faced with a situation that will not play out well for anyone.
Its a lovely morning, sun is out, heat off in the bedroom and the window open. DB is raring to get out into the garden. We will start the gardener back next week.
Yesterday I spent most of the day sorting out the things that go with the Janome machine I am selling, The decision has been made to swap the tables round, so the bigger table is under the window once the janome has gone. I now need to find the accessories for the Brother machine and have them to hand when we travel up to Sheffield at the end of next month.
I have ordered the fold up bed, waiting to hear when it will be delivered, once we have that the sewing room can be rejigged for the time being.
The quote for the hall is in, its almost as much as the bedroom
Freezers are emptying at a reasonable rate, I want to stock up with meat at some point, just transfer it to the kitchen freezer when I have done the weekly meal plan. Everything is going to be so much more expensive, so economy is going to have to be the by word especially as it looks as if the cost of living could be going up again in October. I do feel so much for those who are finding it a struggle now, heaven knows what it will be like for them.
We have some milk left so I am going to make a rice pudding, it will do us for 2 nights, DB does not mind it cold. So tonights supper is fish and chips.

Morning all..It is very sunny this morning, bit of a shock to the system. My plans today involve some sewing, I have been badgered into a night out tomorrow. I don't want to go but it's a kind of remembrance for the two guys who died as well as a birthday, there'll be old work colleagues there so I expect I'll be glad I went afterwards. Need something to wear though thats sack enough to hide me but looks fairly decent. I have a plan for something.I just emptied the magic cupboard and managed to drop a glass, which shattered into absolute smithereens everywhere. Then I had to try and keep the cats out who couldn't understand why I was calling them to come away from the kitchen when the kitchen is obviously the place where prince and princess food is and is where the tuna magically appears. Then the hoover died partway through use..Just one of them days. Which is still not even a smidgen as bad as the people of Ukraine have it. I'm so appalled at what little we are doing to stop this. I expect I've watched too many films where they dispatch special forces or the sas to chop off the serpents head.I must admit, I am worried. For someone to be as mad to do something like that who access to world destroying weapons is a bit scary. OH helpfully pointed out we'd be in a target zone thanks to the amount of armed forces bases locally which amazingly, didn't help at all with the fear....One day at a time and all that though.Nelski, I am kind of sorry I did do sobby stuff. Of all the people on this thread you have had much more to contend with than most, and do it with so much grace. I'd wave a magic wand for you too. Good luck with your shoe cull, hugs for any grief that's going to cause. And i am perkier, I just have those days you know..Scarlet, we do actually have jumble sales occasionally here, the church organises them and it is as bad now as it was then with the scrambling for a bargain. Well done on being strong against the clutter
TA, how funny you got a hamster out of one! Orkney, it took me far too long to work out what you meant by Orcadian when it was staring me in the face...Jackie, how funny we are about colours from childhood. For me, I will never wear navy thanks to school uniforms whereas my sister is never out of it. Hope he had a lovely day yesterday. Ruby, good lord, I wonder what that was all about too! Nanny, hope you're having a wonderful time...sans storm damage...Look after yourselves today and take care all. P.S. sorry for the essay!

Morning all. Lots of driving rain overnight but a bright and sunny day today (with wind, of course). Last night we saw the C5 programme about the long winter of 1963 and it made me feel cold just watching it. Somehow we got through it (no choice really) but it brought back memories of trudging to school through the snowdrifts, always being cold and wondering when or if we'd get our next coal delivery. It seemed as if we'd never be warm again.
I'm also concerned about what is happening in the Ukraine. Some days I dread to think what else is going to happen in the world. Life is hard enough without people like P*tin making it even harder. I think he's lost the plot.
Friday soon seems to have come around again so it's the usual admin stuff and a quick tidy to return things to where they "live". This afternoon I'll change the net curtains downstairs and get them in the WM, they really do look quite grubby in this sunshine. While they're doing I'm going to empty the sideboard and see if there's anything from there that can go in the CS bag.
Easy meals today: we've had sardines on toast for breakfast, lunchtime will be cheese & crackers followed by grapes and egg & chips for tea. I have a carton of LL milk to use up so I'll be making a rice pudding with it. Snap, Deleted_User. I've tidied the freezer drawers (again) so everything is where I like it to be instead of being all mixed up. I dare say that won't last long.-taff: You’ve nothing to apologise for, we all have our down days and it’s good to be able to offload, if not in person then somewhere like here.
Scarlet: I used to love a jumble sale too but they do seem to be absent nowadays. As Gers says, people seem to want to sell unwanted things nowadays. Well done on the carrier bag leaving the house btw.
TA: I had to chuckle at how you ended up with a hamster via a jumble sale.
OrkneyStar: I’m sorry to hear your mum is not well and now has a broken wrist to contend with..
Jackie: Loving your tale about the striped yellow/brown jumper and the grey socks. It’s funny how memories like that stick with us for life. You’re so right about today’s throw away society, there’s just too much waste of perfectly good things that can be reused or repurposed or even given away to someone who might need it.
RedRuby: What a drama for you, I hope your neighbour can get the help she so clearly needs. Glad to hear you’re feeling better too, the toast will taste like a feast!
Take care everyone and enjoy your day whatever you are doing. XBe kind to others and to yourself too.11 -
Hi everyone,
I didn't post yesterday because the news brought me down, I still have a sinking feeling, especially when I think of Esben and my new grandchild, what sort of world are we bringing them up in.
Orkney Star, have you tried Quordle (four Wordles in one). I do Globl but not Nerdle, don't fancy the numbers even though I do Samurai Sudokus (5 linked sudokus) on paper.
Taff, Nelski, Poppy and anyone else struggling with their health I hope things get better for you but please continue to post about your experiences.
We're packing up to go home, we've been promised that all the missing bedding will be returned today so hopefully it will.
Better go, happy birthday for yesterday Scarlet and for you tomorrow Gers, in case I don't get on.
Have a good day.12 -
Good afternoon all,We had some snow last night - I had to put a brolly up just to let pooch into the garden for her last constitutional & she was wet through- not what you need at bedtime.Went as quick as it came though. The news is very worrying, & very hard to watchHappy Birthday for tomorrow Gers if I don't get on - I know we have to be across town for 8.20 for DGS football, and dog walked before we go.You sound a bit brighter today Taff, & if it made you feel a bit better after posting yesterday that's good, don't knock it xGlad you're feeling better Ruby- hope the lady is okI've been out this morning,DS ran me to the hospice shop with 2 big bags , yay. The man taking them was very charming and grateful. I was grateful I'd got rid of 2 bulky coats amongst the other things
Then I nipped into the As*A across the road, then walked home. Trying low carb again and upping exercise to get rid of excess blubber before the wedding in May
Smoked mackerel for lunch, which I need NOW
Take care all x:heartsmil 'A woman is like a teabag: You never know her strength until you drop her in hot water'. (Eleanor Roosevelt)10
