Think we are forgetting that whilst the OP may be able to return the car he still has to convince the finance company.
Haven't forget, but thanks for the reminder it's a good point well made 👍
I don't see how the finance company's wishes can overrule UK consumer law.  They can charge interest for the period involved, I suspect, but they can't supersede the law.
It doesn't but bear in mind the car legally belongs to the finance company and therefore they have a stake in any breach in contract and the exercising of the OP's rights. If he wants to reject the car he must do via the finance co.

You say you are not local to the supplying garage.  Did you buy the car in person and test drive, or was it a remote purchase and the car delivered to you?
Yes, it was bought in person following a test drive. I didn't get it possession of the car until the dealship handled the vehicle's mot which was expired from November if I remember correctly. The issue didn't become apparent until a few days later when I came to the realisation that I wasn't fooling myself about something not feeling right when driving.
It will be your responsibility to get it to the dealer.  Had it been delivered to you in a completely remote sale, then they would have to pick it up.

What is the age of the car?
    Thanks. Its a 2014 i30.

Is the car otherwise okay apart from the worn track rod end & "issues" with the brakes.
Track rod ends do wear over time and are a relatively cheap fix for the supplying garage to correct - £30 for the part and 1-2 hours labour max.

With regard to the brakes what did the garage that examined them say were the issues and did they show you or take photos of the faults as evidence?

After reporting the issue to the finance company and returning to the dealership today, the car was returned and everything cancelled. When I arrived someone took the car out for a run while I waited. The manager then brought me into the office about 30m later and said the we'll just cancel everything and take the car. They never explicitly admitted there was a fault, but the switch in attitude from previous interactions was clear. I think they knew there was a problem and didn't want their ego bruised to admit it so finally accepted that just being compliant was best option. Thanks everyone for taking the time to comment.

My daughter is going through this , bought a car last week , signed took it out and it went into limp mode and had an engine fault, dealer picked it up and changed the spark plugs , took it home next day and it went into limp mode again engine light on , dealer picked it up again and said give them another chance to fix it and it was the coil pack , she lost confidence in this car and has now told them she is rejecting , they have sent the rejection to the finance company and my daughter has also been in touch with the finance company . Hoping they will cancel the agreement and refund the part exchange which was 4k for their old car .
