Is my SSE payg standing charge excessive?

Just topped up my PAYG gas meter (SSE Standard PAYG Tariff) and it's eaten most of my credit....called SSE and was told it was Standing Charge Debt. I'm paying £1.19/day apparently over £430 just to stand still!!
Is that excessive or just standard? Seems anything from 10-80p is the norm??

No, it shouldn't be £1.19/day, but if you've let your credit run out, the daily standing charge still keeps accumulating so when you do top-up again you may have several days standing charge deducted.
You meter should let you display the current unit and standing charge, so have a look there and check what it shows...

You need to establish the standing charge for your exact tariff in your area.  If you're being charged more than that before you've used any energy then it's likely you haven't been topping up sufficiently and are now in debt which is slowly being clawed back every day.
Your meter on the wall will give you the details if you scroll through to the appropriate entry.
  • I was in debt situation (double redundancy within 6mths!!) several years ago on both Elec & Gas hence my going PAYG. All cleared end of last year. However my boiler decided to die just as I switched it on in late Oct. Only just got ££ to repair it.
So understand my service charges built up. But paying £1.19/day.....
I'll look into my local area and see what standard is.

Too late now, but you should have kept the gas meter topped up to pay the standing charge even if you were not using the gas...
Net result is you will have a debt on the meter now (which you can see if you look through the various displays on the meter) which is being recovered little by little each day until it is paid.
