Car Insurance - Date of Birth Incorrect

Options
Hiya - Just had my renewal come through on my car insurance, and spotted that my date of birth is incorrect.  Not massively but it's incorrect, the day and year are correct, but for some reason the month is incorrect.  For example, instead of being 10-01-1992, it is 10-05-1992.  I'm on an online-only policy (so annoyingly can't speak to anyone) so I've put it over to be correct via email.

It's my error when doing online quotes last year.  Is this likely to cause me any problems with points on license and insurance being revoked, or will they be understanding of a genuine error?  Luckily I don't need to claim so it's not at a point they will be looking to get out of paying out so to speak.

  • You making a typo is not going to result in points on your licence and if the insurance company tried to cancel it, when you have made them aware of your mistake, you'd have a strong case at the ombudsman who don't tend to look kindly on cancellations for genuine user errors

It's unlikely to many any real difference to your risk factor or premium, so it shouldn't require anything other than an update and potentially a small adjustment/admin fee.

Assuming it was the result of an error by the customer rather than the insurer, the insurer would be within their rights to cancel IF they would not have offered cover at all had the customer declared the correct details.

So if the OP had put his age down as 28 when actually he was 18, he might have a problem if the insurer had a blanket policy of not insuring 18 year olds. A cancelled policy would still not result in points on his licence, but might make getting insurance more difficult/expensive in future.

However if it's just a matter of a couple of months, realistically no insurer has a blanket policy of insuring 34 year olds but not 33 and 10 month year olds. So they would almost certainly still have given him cover, possibly at a slightly different price. So at worst he's looking at paying a small difference in premium, plus an admin fee.

  • Thanks all, it was a head in hands moment.  It's 100% my fault, human error inputting data on a comparison site.  All the paperwork has it in a short format where the month doesn't stand out as much on a quick glance check, it's only when I went to change my email address and it had the date in long format I noticed it.  It's literally a matter of 4 months and not years so hopefully they'll be understanding.
