What advantage do you think moving to another supplier’s variable tariff would offer?Mark18pll said:We were moved over to Shell energy when Pure Planet folded, just received our price rise notification and the standing charges have risen considerably for electricity.

Very little. Once that price cap hits in April every company will be charging around the same. Now there are 30 less companies in this sector, the "Big 6" will be controlling the market even more. Unfortunately this sector will be far less competitive and those great deals we were once able to get will no longer exist.EssexHebridean said:

Sadly our government and media are only to happy to deflect attention away from themselves.Thrugelmir said:
Which they did in 2020. But the politicians conveniently ignore this fact when trying to grab the media headlines.Phlik said:
That's fine, but if we're going to penalize them for making a profit (and 10% isn't all that) then we also have to be prepared to bail them out when they make a loss.Stevev99 said:Phlik said:
The utility companies are losing money every second of every day, why do you think 30 have gone bust?Stevev99 said:
I guess we'll have to let it all settle and start looking around but right now these companies and who they buy their energy off are licensed to print money.
You might think the cap is a wonderful thing holding the prices artificially low but it isn't, all it's done is force companies to supply below cost price and because of that 30 have gone bankrupt. Who do you think pays for that, it isn't the government, it isn't your supplier, it's you, and me and all the other customers. All the cap has achieved is an overall increase in your bills year on year as operational costs have increased substantially, that'll be your standing charge.
As for the likes of Shell who supply the gas making $19b profit, that's on a $200b+ turnover, less than 10%, should they be altruistic? non profit making?. Everyone loves capitalism provided it's coming out of someone else's pocket.
I hear you of course and favour another stealth tax on the big oil companies to help compensate those that truly cannot afford these rises.Phlik said:

I noticed British gas in the news this morning having dared to make a profit. The fact that they're going to pay back all £27 million of the furlow payments they claimed over the last couple of years (even though they don't need to) will probably fall on deaf ears.2 -

Might be a little late to jump in on this thread...but we were with Green paying £130 a month. Shell took us over and our bill jumped to £230 ...just had the dreaded email advising us of increases from 1st April - they suggest we pay £382 a month!!! Which we cannot afford.
Unfortunately our useage is high as we are in an old poorly insulated house. With an antique central heating system and radiators. Useage is 6000kwk Electricity and 17,000 kWk Gas. We have double glazing but we know its not energy efficient. . We are 2 pensioners living in a 4 bedroomed house and now unable to afford to home improvements. We have central heating on only for 2 hours in morning and at tea time then its a case of lots of layers and hot water bottles. Unfortunately we are just out side financial bracket for any help. Its desperate.0 -

Have you considered selling up and moving to a smaller, more efficient property? My parents did exactly that last year and their energy bills halved.N. Hampshire, he/him. Pretty certain its because most of the newer ones were running what essentially amounts a legalised Ponzi scheme, and had absolutely no capacity to tolerate wholesale energy price increases.Phlik said:The utility companies are losing money every second of every day, why do you think 30 have gone bust?Live the good life where you have been planted.

There may have been a handful of suppliers operating out of their bedrooms supplying 1000 or so customers each that fit that description, but the likes of bulb, green, avro etc with 100000+ customers each (1000000+ in bulbs case) do not fit that description.
However you're entitled to your opinion no matter how wrong it is.1 -
I can understand your gas use being high because of the heating, but have you worked out why your electricity is so high? We use less than you do and we're entirely electric aside from literally just using gas for cooking. It would be worth trying to find out what's using all the electric, and see if that is something you can reduce.Seahorse6 said:Might be a little late to jump in on this thread...but we were with Green paying £130 a month.
