Debt collection company pursuing a debt but no background details and wrong supplier stated.

I wonder if anyone can help to clarify the following.
A friend of mine - a single mother - who has been living in her current property for around 4 years, recently received a letter from a debt collection company stating that she owed a large sum of money relating to a utility bill for a property in which she had lived prior to her present property. The debt collection company provided her only with a copy of what they stated was the final bill for the property.
The debt collectors referred to the debt being associated with British Gas, which is rather odd because her supplier for the property was Sainsburys.
It would appear that the debt had been sold on to the debt collection company, one assumes by BG - which undoubtedly is a practice that goes on but which is one that I personally find to be abhorrent on several counts - but that aside, can anyone advise exactly what the legal position is in regard to the "demand", given the above details..

  • Sainsburys energy was a trading name of British Gas that was licensed out, has she tried contacting BG with the address to find out more details?

Did she leave her previous propery owing any gas company money? Is it her debt with some details incorrect?

The first question that needs an answer is did she pay her final bill on leaving or did she leave owing money?

If there was money owed then she needs, unfortunately, to pay it.

She should have received correspondence over the years but only, of course, if she left a forwarding address or notified BG / Sainsbury of her new address.

Techie Stuff is not really the place for this you would get better advice over on the Debt board.
