British Gas have told me that they are increasing my DD to an amount that I consider unreasonable in view of my current consumption. Can I challenge this?

You can certainly call them about this, but it would be a good idea to do your own calculations first to make sure they are not right...
If you are on a fix and you've not been letting debt grow on your account then there shouldn't be any need to change the DD, but if you are on their variable tariff then you would expect an increase with the changes approaching in April.
Ultimately, you still can't agree then take Gerry's route, but make sure you can handle the higher winter bills, so set aside a little extra cash during the warmer months to use when it gets colder.

@Voyager2002   In the months to come there are some huge increases to come.

Some info please  - what is your annual consumption (in KWhs not £)  ; what tariff are on and are in credit or debit ?

It's a time to do those basic energy savong measures - switch off those lights etc
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill
