Streaming/casting to smart tv from laptop

I have an 18 month old 64bit laptop with a separate dvd player. I've never used the dvd player, but want to use it now.
I plugged it in and put in a disc, but could not play anything. I then did a search and found VLC videolan, which I have downloaded. I can now watch a dvd on my 15 inch screen.
However, I have a 55 inch smart Sony tv hanging on the wall right in front of me, and would like to be able to cast to this. I can't see any button or menu item that will enable me to do this.
Is it possible to cast to the tv, and if so how?
Thanks in advance for any advice, and bonus points if you can explain it in words of one syllable!

You can use chrome browser to cast your desktop. Just change the source options (obviously need a chromecast device but assume from you referencing to casting that you have this, or it is built into the tv?).
You can also cast directly from VLC (found in playback options and renderer, which in fairness isn't overly obvious) which sounds like what you are trying to do.1 -

One way is to plug one end of an HDMI lead into your laptop and the other end into your TV and select HDMI as the source on your TV.
(mostly one syllable but not all)1 -

(mostly one syllable but not all)
Or would the DVD player plug directly into TV?

I found renderer in the menu, and this works perfectly! Thanks.0 -
