What are these patches on body of car for?

I viewed a car yesterday and saw it has a patch on the body, underneath the rear door. Does anyone know what these patches are covering up or if they are preventing rust?

Makes me anxious to see anything wearing away. I've also seen similar patches on other cars and have attached pictures.

Cheers in advance

They're protection strips to prevent the area getting scuffed when getting in and out of the car. They may or may not be standard to your car but they can be purchased and stuck on yourself. Google helicopter tape.

Often used to prevent erosion of the paintwork caused by small stones / sand caught in the airflow.
  • Thanks for the information 👍 I've since found amazon sells rolls of the stuff.
