Water bills - metered v ratable value based.

I've just been reading an article about water meters and apparently Severn Trent is one of six providers who have been given authority to install meters whether people want them or not.  We are supposedly in a 'water stress' area.  Hard to believe when you see the pictures of flooding on the Severn which flows just a couple of miles from where I live.

Sounds like we're in the same part of the world.

In 2000 we moved from a 4 bed on rateable value, into a 4 bed with a swimming pool and fish pond, on meter with Severn Trent. Pool needed a big top up every summer. Pool & pond both needed several smaller top ups depending on weather. Very little hosepipe use, but pots & garden watered with watering cans as needed. Most of the time only 2 adults, careful but not miserly with water use.

After 20 years there, we were still paying less annually than in the previous house. We never paid more than £200 per year. 

Moved here Feb 2021, still Severn Trent, bill to 31 Dec 21 £127, and that includes leaking CH pipe somewhere underground which we hope was fixed a few weeks ago.

£30 a month here on a meter which must be way better than what it was before the meter, being a big 4 bedroom house. To be honest we don't think about water use much so we don't consciously save water.
If you have power showers, don't believe the line about showers using less water than baths, my wife only gets out of the shower once the hot water tank has emptied!

I did a price estimate on the water use link provided earlier. Came out to about £380 on a water meter. We currently pay over 8 months, and this year's water rates bill has just arrived - £380. Yorkshire Water.

Three adults in a three-bed bungalow.  Was £580 now approx. £360 with a meter.

Greenhouse and some of the garden is watered from two butts, thinking of getting another.
