OP, what exactly does the report state? How often did you service your laptop (clean out the build up of dust, check thermal paste etc)?
The big problem here is that Lenovo are adamant that if the case is opened up that will void any warranty.

Opening the case cannot breach your statutory rights though
Maybe not but it gives everyone an excuse to ignore the problem
Retailer can quite easily maintain it was sold with a warranty and the manufacturer should fix
Retailer can also say the user opened the case and if the heatsink had evidence of being removed to check thermal paste would I imagine easily be able to state
The heatsink was removed by a non approve service agent . The chip fried. Therefore the heatsink would not have been  correctly reinstalled to Lenovo standards

It could be fair to argue someone without knowledge in the area, such as the consumer, could have caused damage by opening the case.

However a term implying a consumer was only entitled to a remedy if any inspection (or repair*) was carried out by an agent approved by the retailer would be unfair as it would remove impartiality.

*where that repair was undertaken by the consumer's choice of agent as the trader had failed to offer a remedy.

And a MOSFET chip tends not to have a heatsink, so removing and replacing the CPU heatsink/thermal paste is a red herring. ;)
