Ex-housemate moved out without paying final rent. No contract signed. Small claims court?

I pay all the rent and bills to a landlady each month and basically manage the property I live in on her behalf but unofficially. I recently had a changeover of tenants and then had a chap move in who after 2 months of living together I asked to move out because he wasn't keeping the house secure, was disrespectful and very messy.
We never signed a new contract but had a verbal agreement that he would pay the rent. I have evidence of him paying the rent each month for 2 months and he is also on council tax bills for the same period. He failed to pay the final rent instalment and I would like to get this money from him. I'm thinking of using the small claims court. It will cost £50 to file the case (if that is the correct terminology) as what he owes is between £300 and £500.
Does the verbal agreement and evidence I can provide stand up? I've also tried contacting him multiple times in various ways and had no response. I can also provide evidence of this. Finally I've given him warning (factual and non-threatening) as to what I intend to do.
Any advice/info?

Move on.
He'll say he doesn't owe you any money and you won't be able to prove otherwise.
