I had a DRO a few years ago and one of the things I was very concerned about was switching current accounts. I needn't have worried, though. I applied to Co-op for a basic account and they accepted me with open arms. Well, maybe not open arms but they accepted me! I was with Barclays at the time and had to leave them because my overdraft was part of the DRO.

I wasn't allowed any overdraft with Co-op (naturally) and I'm proud to say that I've not needed one since the onset of my DRO. It really did teach me a lot about managing money.

Co-op switched my direct debits, standing orders and regular payments into the account and they'll arrange the same for you. Yes, of course you're allowed to have direct debits with a basic account.

I've been with Nationwide for a few years now and am so far quite happy with my 'normal' current account with them. I switched from the Co-op once the six year period was over as I wanted a brand new fresh start.

Good luck! You're on the right road. It does seem strange and scary at first but you'll be fine.   :)

Out of interest, were you able to use the Current Account Switching Service to move to a basic account?
