How do I open .GIF files

My medical record is full of .GIF files - they are generally only 1kb in size
I can't figure out how to open them
I had a thought - that they may be misnamed .TIF files but am still unable to open them...
Any suggestions ?

  • What machine are you using? What program are you using to view your records?

Both .gif & .tif files can be opened with Google Photos or Windows Photos.

Firstly, you have to remember that any file can be given any extension, its just a text name. GIF is traditionally images (graphics interchange format) but could be something else too.  GIFs have frequently been used for other purposes too, especially as they can be transparent, unlike JPG, such as tracking emails being opened or correcting layout.

Anything that can open image files should be able to open GIFs however given they are all 1kb could mean they're corrupted and hence not opening.

1kb could mean they are 'shortcuts' to the actual gif file (assuming windows system)
  • I will ask the surgery...

I used to work for a local authority that used Lotus Notes it included lots of small gifs in emails
They were logos etc all were about 1k
  • Also many of my medical records docs are not available to me...
Ie) I do not have permission to view my own records.

Have you had a look at the NHS App (not the COVID one) ? This gives details of inoculations, consultations etc

Yes and give or take a few exceptions - the NHS App is exactly the same
It has a whole lot of coded entries eg) xFW7gT

Given the push for centralisation etc they need to stop allowing surgeries to have options on these types of things.

For non-GP appointments our surgery only allows the online booking of smear tests so the nurse has a laugh every quarter when I, as a CIS male, go in for my regular treatment.
