Credit card for car hire

I am trying to apply for a credit card to use solely to hire a car in Lanzarote. I have already paid for the car hire with a visa debit card but I need a credit card to get the car once I am there. I don't have a regular monthly income as I'm partially retired, I work for myself & have money in the bank and am a homeowner but I've been turned down for a few credit cards in my attempt to sort this out and I know this has probably damaged my 'credit score', I'm in a pickle and I don't know what to do.

Where have you applied? You need to aim low, such as Vanquis or Aqua.1
