go for a colour laser printer
Xerox and Brother have plenty of generics that work with them, newer HP ones are cheap to buy but generics have not come out yet so expensive to refill0 -
If you don't need to print in colour then a cheap black and white laser printer is a lot better value than an inkjet. The toner will last for a long time, they print faster, and there is no ink that dries up or print heads to get clogged up.

I do need colour - I don't print a lot but when I do I occasionally use colour.

I am looking at other makes currently- it now seems my choice is almost non existent anyway as all I keep seeing is 'not in stock'.

If you need inkjet, I have an old Epson one which takes compatible cartridges and works fine. It's an XP-342, was relatively cheap but is discontinued now. However, it looks like you can still use compatible cartridges with the current XP range. If you print photographs, inkjet can give better results than laser, but otherwise it could be worth considering laser printers as suggested above, especially monochrome ones.

I've probably only printed 3 photos in 5 years so not a necessity. I may have to bite the bullet and buy a Canon knowing I will have expensive ink - I've found one in stock at John lewis that seems to do everything I need.

I would echo going with a laser printer, we took the plunge after lots of inkjet printers had problems. they were cheaper to buy but the problems quickly eroded any advantage.
We simply didn't use the inkjet enough and replacing inks, cleaning the head, replacing the head was an expensive and fruitless exercise. The laser printer HP colour LaserJet pro M277 we've had for about 5 years is still on it's first set of proper inks.0 -

Thank you everyone for your thoughts- I have bought a small Canon that is coming tomorrow evening so will be in time to print my boarding passes and to complete my last few things I need for work.I suspect if I hadn't been desperate I may well have spent longer researching models and types - but I hadn't reliaed that the issue of non availability was so rife, so all my initial research yesterday went to waste as soon as I tried to actually buy anything!I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards.
