Also my main concern is new EDF standing charge @41p per day. Octopus SC is 24p. But I wonder if that could change after I sign up to their tariff at some stage.
Once you agree to a fixed tariff, the tariff is fixed (barring rare events like a change in the VAT rate). That included the daily standing charge.
How much electricity do you use in a year, on average? If it's less than about 6200kWk/yr, the Octopus tariff will be cheaper. More than that and EDF will be cheaper.
(For an accurate comparison you need to do the full calculation with the exact tariff details, including the decimal points, but it's going to be something like that.)

Hi QrizB , thanks for your reply.

Yes  less than 6200. I think it  would be cheaper with Octopus.

But I don't like the idea of pre-paying a company which I think I would have to do with Octopus and then having to chase up for overpayments or whatnot. Crazy I know. But I do like the quarterly arrangement and then paying by card as I do currently. But Edf will change all that I expect. I always thought that DD gave a company too much control as well.

Couple of posts here this morning re Octopus concerns worries me a bit have to say.
Not that Edf are perfect by any means.

    Still thinking it all over.

I've recently switched to Octopus and it's been great. I'd recommend buying an EV and getting onto their Go tariff which is way cheaper than their other fixed prices. You can still get the £50 referral credit for switching which should alleviate some of the pressure of having to pay in advance.

Octopus are also one of the partners for the Ripple Energy wind farm.

Octopus’ big selling point is the lack of tariff exit fees. CS has been a bit slow recently but massively better than my experience with EDF. Octopus’ billing system is streets ahead of EDF’s offer which is probably the reason why EDF is leasing Octopus’ system.

I really don’t buy into this concern about paying for energy in advance of supply. Suppliers are required to pay their wholesalers in advance so why should they not require the same from their customers? We all pay for a lot of things in advance: insurance; road tax; TV licence etc. Octopus also has a very good App that allows customers to set their own DD payments.

    Hi Petriix -thanks for replying.

    What is an EV?

'You can still get the £50 referral credit for switching which should alleviate some of the pressure of having to pay in advance.'

I think this is my main sticking point- paying in advance.

    EV = electric vehicle
  • I'm in a similar situation. Scared to stay on variable rate but unsure if I should switch to a fixed rate.

What I like to do when searching for new suppliers is taking either a day or weeks usage figures then putting them against the rates that a new supplier offers. The Octopus SC is 17p per day cheaper but 1p per kWh dearer so you wouylld have to use less than 17 kWh per day to make it cheaper than EDF.
Someone please tell me what money is
