A friend of ours sadly lost her husband last Christmas.
They shared the laptop and his was the administrators account.
She has asked me to remove his account but keep hers - will this be a problem?
Whilst I have it, ought I to fit an SSD, and if so, which one?
Ideapad 520s, core i5 7th gen,

If she is not an administrator account you can't remove his account as there always needs to be an administrator account on the machine.
So easiest solution upgrade her to admin and remove the other account.

Though if you're going to replace the hard drive its moot anyway.

This model looks like it could have been sold with "up to 512 GB TB SATA SSD or up to 128 GB PCIe SSD + 1 TB SATA HDD hybrid storage", so you may already have an SSD.

    Hard Drive
    1x 128GB PCIe

    that will be SSD,   M.2

Looking at the manual there is probably room for a second drive if you need to beef it up.

I've visited our friend and investigated.
SSD is fine and only half full, so no extra hardware needed.
We changed Mrs a/c to administrator and removed Mr - all good we thought but .....
When we rebooted it it's default option is still to log into Mr's account despite there being no other evidence of it elsewhere.
I looked in netplwiz and nothing in there.
Are we missing a trick or is there perhaps a registry tweak that's required?

Win Key+R brings up the Run box.

Type "control userpasswords2" and press Enter.

Depending on the build of Windows 10 on the compmuter there may be a "Users must enter a username and password" box on this screen, as per here:

But this was removed in some update last year.

Is that the same as netplwiz?
In there the tick box "users must enter a password ..." is unticked.

Will investigate further next time we visit.

Looks like it is the same, I wasn't aware it was the same thing.

I'm not aware of any other option to force a log-on to a specific account in a home environment (and indeed if the account has been removed it shouldn't be ale to log in anyway, unless its creating a new account each time).  So unless something unique has happened to that laptop when it was set up this is not normal behaviour.

Assuming of course this has always been in a home environment and isn't like a works laptop that will usually behave in specific and relatively unique ways for its working life.

It certainly hasn't ever been a 'works' laptop - I did see a registry fix on one of your links, so I will investigate this.
We have 'only' restarted ... would a complete off and on make a difference do you think?

    Thanks
