Changing the battery on a ford ka

Hello.  Can anyone put me right.  I currently have a Ford Ka studio car.  I think the battery which is about 8 years old now is showing signs of aging.  If i where to change the battery myself how could i do this without losing any radio codes or computer settings?  I have seen videos where an obd 2 type of crocodile clip cables are connected to the battery posts and the other end  is connected to what i think is called a power bolt device that gives a small output voltage of about 12 volts to keep the direct current flow to the cars settings while the battery is changed.  Could anyone tell me how i could get one of these devices. They don't appear to cost very much?
Thank you for your help.

Is the radio code somewhere in the handbook?, if it were me, I’d find somewhere that sold batteries with free fitting…
  • Getting the radio code is often free. Try a local independent car shop for the battery, they often test and fit for free and may have a temporary power supply.
  • If you change the battery yourself take the old battery to a scrap yard, I got £10 last time I did this

If it's only the radio code you're worried about, check in the handbook or the bumf that came with the car - it's nearly always written down somewhere.
If you do want to keep an uninterrupted power supply, it's easy to do if you can borrow 2 sets of jump leads:
    1.  Get your new battery ready, put it on the floor, connect leads from it to the connectors on your car.
    2.  Remove old battery, put it on the floor.
    3.  Connect another set of leads from it to the car
    4.  Remove leads from new battery
    5.  Install new battery

OK, it's a little bit of a fiddle, and those power supply gizmos are not expensive.  But if you are able to borrow 2 sets of jump leads, and if you're a skin-flint like me, it's a cost-free way of doing it
