Security camera system?

Options
Neighbour had their vehicle stolen from their drive so we are thinking of buying a camera system.  See some like this  https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/265327892587?hash=item3dc6c6586b:g:h4UAAOSwDvphTZEI
Does anyone have one or similar?

For me it was all about how I would run the cables.

The one you linked to has wireless cameras but they will need power so depending on where you are mounting them, will you be able to route a cable and plug them in somewhere.

I ended up going for a PoE 'power over ethernet' version where each of the cameras are connected and powered by a single ethernet cable.  For me it was far easier to run 4 x ethernet cables from recorder to the cameras than try and run power to each camera from the nearest power point.
Imagine that my recorder is in the loft - hole drilled in side of house for 4 x ethernet cables and those cables then route round the walls from each of the cameras and back to the recorder.  Most of the wiring is on the side of the house so it doesnt look too bad.

I bought one almost exactly 2 years ago just before the start of lockdown #1 - A Reolink kit on a deal at Amazon.

    Hope this helps

Thanks, there is no problem getting power to them, one on garage and one on side of house with the consumer unit close by inside.  but the virgin modem is not so easy to get a cable to.

The control box of the item you linked to just requires a network lead that goes from the back of the router to the cctv box.  In theory that could be 100m away if there is any way of running a network cable from the VM router somewhere/anywhere you can site the cctv box.

One thing I would check is that everything is all completely set up inside your house before you start attaching cameras to walls.  Then make sure the box wifi reaches the camera fine (possibly by running an extension cable and plugging cameras in when you are up on ladders etc.

On a general note - when I installed the CCTV, I was more interested in making the cameras quite visible - My thinking was that if an opportunist sees the cameras or the red glow at night then they 'might' go somewhere else.  My expectations are that its unlikely I would be able to identify someone in dark clothing with a dark hoodie and a dark hat on but it does make it feel safer.

I installed an IR illuminator near my main camera, partly because the red glow is larger and more noticeable, but also because:
    - it is much more powerful than the one on the camera
    - being offset from the camera, you get a LOT fewer false alarms due to back--scatter from spider webs, rain etc
  • I have an IP camera installed. Wansview to be specific. Decent app but main issue is that when it does detect motion, the recordings aren't very long unless you pay for their cloud service (which is reasonably priced to be fair).
