    As an example using today's best fixed rate savings accounts, and for the sake of simplicity forgetting about the need to keep savings in any account below £85,000 for protection:

    One year (2.85%) followed by a three years (3.22%) would leave you with a balance of £166,078 after the four years you specified (assuming basic rate tax and no other savings to impact your personal savings allowance).

    A five year (3.4%) would leave a balance of £173,035 after five years, using the same calculation and assumptions.
