Easements which have been in place during 2020/21 and 2021/22 to accommodate the increased working from home during the Covid19 pandemic are set to end on 5 April 2022.

So for the tax year 2022/23 the answer would be no.

Is this not a standard tax allowance anyway?

It is, but my understanding is that the conditions to qualify for it were relaxed considerably for 2020-21 and 2021-22 dur to Covid, but for 2022-23 are going back to what they were previously. So you will be able to claim it if your employer contract tells you that you MUST work from home, but not if you choose to.....

The allowance was never available to those who chose to work from home. The relaxation for 2020/21 and 2021/22 was that you only had to fulfil the conditions for some part of the relevant tax year to get the relief for the whole year.
  • Am I right to think that commutable distance to main place of work is/was reasonable grounds for claiming? E.g. living in Newcastle, office is in London?

The allowance was never available to those who chose/choose to WFH.
    so distance is not relevant.
  • Just had my tax code for next financial year and have got work from home allowance. But my contract does say home based worker
  • The WFH allowance, claimed using HMRCs micro site, only gave the allowance for a year, it would then be automatically removed from your tax code for the next year. I've claimed it for 20-21 & 21-22, but my tax code for 22-23 will revert back to standard code starting from 6 April 2022. I doubt it will be available, via the micro site for the coming tax year (22-23).

Yes, for example where the workplace was closed down temporarily. Where coronavirus was the reason for working from home, HMRC did not insist on formal documentation in the employment contract.
