Stair coverings

The stairs in my house are ugly - damaged wood with paint on the sides. I have had the stairs carpeted (twice) but due to my previous cat this didn't last long. We took the carpet off as it was a trip hazard. I have karndean on the ground floor and wondered if there was a similar covering I could use on the stairs? I'm sure I saw some wood (or wood effect) stair covers but don't know what they are called so have not been able to find them on an internet search. I have two cats now, one doesn't claw but the other seems to like to scratch the door mats so I have my doubts carpet will last.

It seems to be an increasingly popular option to use luxury vinyl tiles on stairs. The difficulty used to be getting it right on the nosing (the front bit of the tread that overlaps the riser) but the solution available now is special tiles with a moulded nosing.

Search for "vinyl plank for stairs". I gave it serious consideration as I have long-haired, double-coated dogs and was fed-up with vacuuming the stairs every day. The quotes I got were double the cost of good quality carpet and underlay and there was a risk of it being a slip hazard. If all the paintwork was up to scratch (no pun intended!), you could install individual pads of carpet on each tread and replace any that got damaged - they usually come in packs of 13-15 for under £50."Cheap", "Fast", "Right" -- pick two.1

Not sure if you'd be willing, but we have something like this fixed (flat, rather than on a corner) to our landing wall.

We've just put new carpet in and the cats haven't gone to scratch it at all - they didn't the old one either, except where they wanted to get into our bedroom and the door was shut (which has clear plastic protector on now).1
