April price bump on Economy 7

I've just received a "Changes to your electricity tariff in line with the Government’s price cap" letter from our provider: Utility Warehouse.

It says that the Night Unit Rate (per kWh) is going up from 7.56 p  to 18.734 p.

According to my calculator, that's an increase of 147%

Is my calculator faulty or has the world gone mad?

Unfortunately you were on an exceptionally good deal before, which just makes the pain greater as you are brought into the current reality.
Most E7 deals elsewhere have had night rates at least 50% higher than yours was for quite some time now.

  • Yes, it was a good deal but we paid for it with a higher than average daytime rate. I guess they have closed the gap. That's unfortunate as we used 90% nighttime and 10% daytime.
  • Wow - that’s one heck of a good ratio - how on earth do you achieve that? I thought our 70/30 was pretty decent!

It's an unusual setup: 1000 litres of water heated to 95 degrees overnight in insulated tanks that gets used for c/h and hot water. No gas or oil. There's a massive storage heater too.  Now, we're a bit bu99ered.
  • Yes, unusual about covers it! Good on you - I’ve not heard of anyone with that sort of setup before!

  • I worry for my mother who is 93 and lives in a one-bedroom apartment in a sheltered housing block. During January, she used 682 kWh night and 56 kWh day. She pays E.ON 9.74p a kWh for the night. An indicative night rise of 100% would hit her hard.

That's what I call a heat store! 60kWh usable, more or less? Impressive.

The is still a huge glut of power at night, it seems to be pure profiteering, Maybe as they cant charge the full cost on day rate to other customers they are trying to offset it at night, but its still not right, and we aren't even all charging up cars or running heat pumps yet.

If you check the wholesale prices at eg. Nordpool you'll see that night-time electricity is usually still quite expensive. There's rarely a glut.
