Asking to buy house from housing association.....

I am not sure if this is the right place for this question, so if it is not please feel free to direct me to correct forum.

Does anyone have experience with requesting to buy the house they rent from their housing association? I know asking to buy from a council is easier but I have been looking online and on the gov website it suggests that you can write to request to buy the house you rent. I wondered if this is as successful as buying from the council as I read the housing association can refuse.

We are trying to find ways to buy our house or stay in the local area and a mortgage adviser suggested I should do this but they wasn't sure how successful it would be.
Any advice would be appreciated.

You can contact them to find out if it is possible.

No harm asking, might get it discounted.

Don't expect anything off full market price.  You can ask, they don't have to sell.  Any contacts with directors or senior staff?
  • Thank you for the advice, I have spoken to them and I have to fill out a form before they will make a decision. I will see what they say, although I have a feeling they will say no to the right to acquire.

pretty sure they will be entitled to a discount under the “right to acquire” scheme, it’s not guaranteed but you fill out the form to request it and if they approve the sale im sure it does come with a discount, the amount differs depending on the area.
  • The Right to Aquire discount for Housing Association properties are between £9,000 to £16,000 depending on where you live.

Apologies, I had been unclear: I am opposed to tax-payers providing discounts through "right to acquire", and am aware many councils & housing associations have finished with them & hope all others do so also.

Fully appreciate & respect many will not agree with me.

    Best wishes to all.

Good luck and come back and update.

I will also be applying to buy my Housing Association maisonette later in the year once i've reached the 3 year threshold.

I hope they will sell as my neighbour downstairs was a transfer from council tenancy so has protected right to buy which means hopefully they must be willing to sell.

I'm more than happy to pay market price but i guess there might be a small discount with right to acquire. Nothing quite like right to buy discount so i'm not sure why people have an issue with it.
