Continuing Self Assessment when there is no requirement to do so

in Cutting tax
Disposed of a rental property in this current tax year, so in theory after I do my next tax return in a couple of months time, they'll be no requirement for me to do a Tax Return every year. I don't have any other income other than my salary as a PAYE employee.
However, I would prefer to continue to do a Self Assessment every year as I find it quite handy for a lot of other things. Reclaiming tax on my pension contributions.... ditto on charitable donations, working from home allowance (though granted this may not not apply to future tax years) and such like.
Can I choose to continue doing one? Obviously I'll stay quiet on it anyway but if HMRC write to me to tell me that I no longer need to do one is it possible for me to request that I continue doing it, even though I don't need to?

My experience was that after a couple of years of just simple PAYE income, HMRC said I no longer needed to do self assessment and when I asked if I could stay on SA they said no.1

Nothing to stop you continuing to do one online via your personal online tax account whether you need to do one or not.
We have several clients who don't "need" to do one and never receive a notice to complete one, but we do them anyway for various reasons.
At the end of the day, HMRC can't stop you doing one!1 -
AIUI, when you get the letter from HMRC saying you no longer need to do a SA, it also continues to say that you must tell HMRC about any income they do not know about.
Voluntary SA is an obvious way to tell HMRC about any such income, just you won't be sent the reminders automatically.2
