Also I don’t know if I’m missing something obvious but is there a reason you can’t stick a plug socket on? You’ve already got the back box, it’ll complete the ring and you’ll get a new socket out of it.

I guess that depends on your definition of basic really doesn't it! Some may consider wiring a plug or replacing a fuse as basic. 

I know my limits, irritatingly if I hadn't hurried, and thought about this, it would have been a piece of !!!!!!. After getting confused with an odd kitchen light about 7 years ago I'd always take pictures. I was just rushing yesterday, never a good idea!
