If this is a case where the Dad passed away and all was left to the Mother then, as executor, then I can understand it. However if otherwise, then it needs attending to after one year at most. The cost of £3000 seems excessive unless the estate is complicated.I'm a retired IFA who specialised for many years in Inheritance Tax, Wills and Trusts. I cannot offer advice now, but my comments here and on Legal Beagles as Sam101 are just meant to be helpful. Do ask questions from the Members who are here to help.1

Who did she leave her estate to ? Who waas executor of the will ?Same questions for your father - did he leave a will ? Who was the beneficiary ? Who was the executor ?I'm unclear when you say 'his wife was made executor' if you are referring to your fathers (predeceased) wife or your father's wife's son's wife (your step-sister in law ?).And, if the latter, whether she was executor for your father's wife, your father or both ?Two deaths in quick succession would complcate matters if the first left their estate to the second, as the first would need to be dealt with before you could fully deal with the second. As would the executor being no longer living. But four years is still over the top unless the estates were very very complicatedor there was a lot of property to sell .....1

Apply for probate yourself, explain the situation, let the probate registrar decide/direct what needs to be done next.0

The OP doesn't appear to have visited the site since February, so it's probably not worth carrying on with this thread....0
