I received a shipment from Shopplay, a retailer I use quite a lot. With this it came with my items and inside of the box was around 8 flattened cardboard boxes with other peoples names and addresses on.

what can I do here?

  • You might also contact the retailer in question and advise them that it's not a good idea to include waste like this as packaging.

I agree they shouldn't do it. I suppose they are heeding the exhortation for us all to reuse as well as recycle.

I am curious though about how they come to possess all these boxes clearly from different retailers?

I would guess they've acquired some "recycling" from somewhere and are using it as padding. I suspect they're not a data controller in relation to the individuals in question, so not sure they actually have any DPA obligations.

I always remove the labels before putting in the recycling myself.

Step over them.  Or put them in the recycling bin so they're not in your way.

Oh, and if you're really concerned about personal data security, don't post (Removed by Forum Team)'s name and address on a public forum, or the address of the person from Hove.

Good point. They have not 'processed' the data. Quite the reverse in fact.
