We've lived in this house 2.5 years and as far as I'm aware, we've had no flowers on whatever this is. About to start building work in this area, don't know whether to try and save it or not. It's quite vigorous, pushing up between a couple of paving slabs.

looks a bit like sedge - we have loads in Somerset
  • Yes we certainly do, it's a b***er too, left untouched it'll run riot - definitely not something i'd save !
I dig clumps out aswell as spraying with glyphosate, to get rid of it.

Looks like some sort of plantain. My first thought was stinking iris.
Not sure it's worth keeping unless you love it or want something to fill in.
However it looks like you have a white  violet hiding under it. That would be worth saving.

    Nice.
But I meant the heart shaped leaves under the thug?

  • Carex pendula...a bit of a thug. Apparently you can use the leaves to weave and the seeds are edible.
  • We call it "fishing grass" - if you happen to have chickens, they adore the seed heads. But it is a thug & gets absolutely everywhere. Sadly my OH loves it & will re-locate seedlings if I don't stop him!

I've never seen flowers or seed heads. It's just like a thick grass.
