New build advice needed

Hello, I reserved a new build last September which had an estimated completion date of Feb-April 2022, the house was at build stage 3, since then it has moved 2 stages to a concrete slab where it has sat with no work being done to it. Completion date was then delayed until June, and I have found out today via my solicitor not from the builder that it has been further delayed until august with a stop date of February 2023. I have not exchanged contracts yet.
Do I just have to accept the 6 month stop date? My solicitor has asked if I want to exchange based on the new dates.

My mortgage offer runs out the end of March

Do you have to accept it? Probably. They're not going to drop themselves in it.
You can ask, but they've got plenty of time to sell to someone else...Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

This is exactly what happened to us. It was awful visiting and finding they had done no work whatsoever for months. We had already exchanged and had a mortgage offer that allowed extensions. It took so long that the mortgage offer expired and we had to apply again. Exceptionally stressful. We did complete after the long stop date. It wouldn’t have been in our interest to pull out by that point. We have been here for 5 years and just moving somewhere bigger so it did work out in the end.2

If you haven’t exchanged contracts yet and you aren’t happy with the proposed date you can walk away. You might lose your reservation fee but long term it might save you a lot of worry and heartache over when your move will happen.2
