halo 3 problems

ok, i finally got a 360 yesterday. it is the first console i have got since the ps1, i cant believe how noisy it is. now apart from it being unbelievably noisy the game halo 3 seems impossible to get into. i find it surprising considering what a popular game it is meant to be. firstly the lack of options for a single player not playing online makes it pretty bad. the main issue is when i play the single player game i dont have a clue what i am doing or were i am going. as most people will know you are part of a team with one of that team having a big arrow above his head. now according to the instructions there is supposed to be a way mark arrow on screen to follow. however this way mark seems to disapppear for most of the time leaving me with no idea of were to go. i cant just follow the rest of the team because they just stand there probably waiting for me to make the right move. when the arrow does appear it is often pointing me towards a cliff face. i do get so far and get past various checkpoints but when i check the mission objective it still says get to river for evac. i just think yeah how am i supposed to do that without the waymark or even the ability to put a map of the area on screen.
can anyone help?
are there any first person shooters easier to just pick up and play and get into? i want one that doesnt seem to be directed solely towards online play like halo 3 seems to be. i know unreal 3 will fit the bill but that doesnt come out until february. i know gears of war and bioshock are supposed to be good but are they easy enough to get into? i already have call of duty 4 by the way. i've just had a go on the training level so far.
what is the best driving game to get. i prefer more the arcade style than realism in terms of the car handling. i want a game were i dont have to win a race before i can play on any of the other tracks. i would like the game to have a good number of tracks. theres nothing worse than a driving game that only has something like 5 tracks.

Personly i found gears of war easy to pick up.it trains you as you go teaching you new skills as you progress through the game and as they become necessary to the game play. this game is third person/first person shooter by zooming in and out0

I have finished HALO 3, didnt have much trouble following the arrows, it did get confusing occasionally when i did get lost but in general it was ok. The game is not that good anyway it only took about 4 hours to finish it on easy, It seems more orientated towards on line play, which is much better than the game itself. If I were you i would forget trying to complete the game and play it online, easy to do, little to think about, just shoot people0

i have played the demo for unreal 3 and that lets you play in all modes either as single player or with other people. thats what halo 3 should do. i found the various modes like slayer and protect the flag only to find i was the only person in it. so i either have to buy more controllers or pay to play online, totally daft. that is an issue for me. i have paid for the console, the game and i am paying for my internet connection. so it is a rip off to expect us to pay just to play other people as well. i will try the free trials though. another bad thing is the pc and therefore the internet is upstairs. so i will only be able to play online on my portable tv unless i buy a router or a vga cable.
anyway back to the game. any ideas why the waymark disappears? or why it seems to direct me towards high cliffs?
are there any cheats for the game? or any websites with solutions? i dont want to have to buy the solution book.0 -
you should have 1 month gold membership when you created your gamertag so you can play on line and try it. Then create another gamertag and you will have another month free etc. As for cheats don't have any myself, the waymark does occasionally give the impression it is taking you over a cliff but i think it means you have gone the wrong way. Sometimes you have to fall through holes and slip through small cracks etc to carry on, this is where the waymark struggles i think. I have played over a thousand matches on line, think the game is great for that, but i do agree about having to pay an extra 40 quid a year to play online is a bit cheeky really, but the connection is good and it is fun shooting real people rather than game generated players0

just to be clear. is it when i get near the end of the free month or after it has expired that i create a new gamer tag to get another free month? surely they must have some way of stopping it otherwise no one would be paying the subscription.
i just got bioshock and gears of war from hmv on the buy one get one free offer. i have just put them on to check they work and if the intros are anything to go by they will be brilliant.0 -
set them up near expiry ,I did it twice with different gamertabs, and got the free months gold, had 2 running at the same time a paid for one and another that I set up. I guess they assume you will want to keep you own gamertag for life so you maintain your scores friends etc0
